The twelve signs of the zodiac are more than just twelve options for your horoscope…
The twelve sacred symbols of the zodiac represent an arc of psychic development, the cultivation of the soul over one’s lifetime. The word zodiac comes from the Greek “zoion,” which means “little creature.” Represented by symbols both animal, mythical, human, and inanimate, the signs in astrology show us different styles of seeing the world, and different modes of self-discovery and expression.
The signs are derived from the seasons, and begin in springtime, with Aries the ram, the sign of the beginner, the new soul. Around the wheel we go until we reach the final sign, Pisces, symbolic of the integration of our personal experience with the transpersonal, collective soul. The signs create a sense of beginning and end, and beginning again.
When it comes to reading your chart, the signs are here to create different styles of planetary expression. Planets represent the pieces of your personality (ego, emotions, communication, etc.) and signs modulate these, giving them a unique spin.
For example, having Mercury in Libra may mean that a communicative priority may be that of balance, of holding steady, and of trying to practice diplomacy. Mercury in Sagittarius folks, on the other hand, may communicate with a sense of quick wits and a fiery, provocative edge.
Here are three ways to think about the signs and their role in astrology:
The twelve signs show us twelve stages of personal development, from life’s innocent beginnings to its wisdom-rich culminations.
The signs influence how planets express their energy in your chart, and give a unique set of skills, preferences, and personality traits.
Each sign has a special set of desires. How does holding the planet in relation with its sign reveal to you the way the different parts of you (the planet in question) wants to act?
E.g. - Venus in Scorpio may express as the part of us that thrives in relationships and creativity (Venus) looking for deep, truthful experiences of transformation and connection with others, being unsatisfied by the superficial (Scorpio).
